Standing in Crap? Look up, silly!

11 Oct

Someone told me this, and its a good story.  I have changed the names to protect the identity of the teller.

“I realized today that I have been looking down and wading through all the bad things I have been dealing with.  I have been saying, ‘Look at how nasty this crap is.  Why is this so bad? Look at all this crap!’

“Then it was like God said, ‘Filex, look up’.  When I looked up I saw a rope dangling just within reach above my head. I had hot had time to notice the rope because I was so focused on the crap.”

What a great story. There are so many time that life is like that.  It makes me think of when Peter was walking on the water towards Jesus.  As long as he looked at Jesus, he was fine, but when he became afraid of the winds, he began to sink.

Thursday Quik Thought: Badness and Goodness

9 Oct

Caddyshack. I haven’t seen this movie in a while but this part of it came into mind recently:

“Son, there are two forces in the world– Goodness and Badness. You need to decide which you want to be. Do you want to be good?” – Judge Smails to Spalding. (close-enough paraphrase).

The difference between being overwhelmed by badness and being an agent of goodness is a matter of perception.  You can look at the world at find as much badness as you like, but this is not a good way to look at it.  A better way is to see the badness as opportunity for goodness to do its work, or for us to do goodness.

Geography of the Middle East: Who Knew?

7 Oct

I have a couple of reasons that I should know more about the Middle East. My dad might be going to Kuwait for business soon, multiple friends have fought there (Iraq, Iran, Kuwait), I study the Bible and other religious texts, lots of our money goes there, it’s in the news, etc.

I decided to get an education on geography the best way possible – take an online quiz!

I got a 53/75 the first time, and was able to get all but one country after the 3rd time.  It seems that Turkmenistan is a slippery little guy. I don’t mean to make fun of Turkmenistan-is, I am just pointing out how uneducated I am.

Anyway. I feel less than educated enough to vote for my next Commander In Chief in a few weeks and it worries me that most of my fellow Americans will probably do about as well as I did on this quiz.

Reply with your score.

Post VP Debate Conclusion: I’m No Nostradamus

3 Oct

Yesterday I predicted how this term’s potential VPs would do in their only debate before the election

Expected result: I thought that Biden would make a fool of himself and then clarify.  I thought that Palin would speak clearly and then make a fool of herself.

What happened: Surprisingly, both showed good tact and presented their cases with more confidence and discipline than I expected.  This debate was easier to watch than last week’s bout between McCain and Obama.  These two people can look at each other in the eyes when speaking.

Major Issues Discussed:  the Economy, Iraq, Afganistan, Israel, Pakistan, Darfur / the Sudan, U.S. giving to foriegn aid, voting records, civil unions…

The winner: Like last week, people will think the person that won is the person they expected to win before it started.

Final conclusion: I don’t understand how Joe Biden’s eyebrows go back and up like they do.  I also felt funny when Sarah Palin winked at me.  My hat is off to both of them for their performance in disciplined speech and their ability to instill confidence.

VP Debate Will Be Equal but Opposite

2 Oct

When asked questions the VP candidates will do the following:

Mr. Biden will initially say something stupid.  When he is asked to clarify he will say something articulate.

Mrs. Palin will initially say something really articulate.  When asked to clarify she will say something stupid.

That’s my prediction. Currently trying to decide if I will be more entertained by The Office or by the VP Debate.
